Still not convinced Kylington leaves. I am not sure he is going to get more money or term than with the Flames. He didn't play for almost 2 years. I know h3 doesn't owe the Flames anything, but it would be a bit of a slap on the face if he pulled a Gaudreau move.
I think he doesn't take what the flames did for him for granted but he's at a new stage in his life and I don't blame him if he wants to win. Not every player is looking for money.
If he needs to move on for his mental health, I completely understand and wish him luck. It might be that he wants to wait a day to see what Conroy does in free agency. If players like Duclair or Debrusk sign with the Flames, he may sign another short-term deal to see if it is a fit for his career. The team did go from a contender to the bottom of the league after all. If he does sign elsewhere, it will be on July 2nd or 3rd. I doubt he will be without a contract for long, but the AAV and length may not be ideal. Time will tell.

What did the flames do though? He was in the players assistance program.
Payed him several million dollars to not play and accomodated and supported him as they could.
Not like they had a choice though. As long as he's in the program he gets paid like any other player. He's also not allowed to leave the program until he is cleared.

I get that but people are acting like the flames did him a favor that no other team would do. The organization doesn't owe him anything and he doesn't owe the organization. I still hope he signs with us, but he doesn't have to.

If it was just about money, yes he would have signed. As I said, it may just be him seeing what the Flames do before he signs if he signs with the Flames. However, I doubt he will get a huge contract. I doubt a team will pay him $6 or $7 million for 6 years. He will get a raise to $4.5 to $5 million, but it will be a 2 year to prove you still have it type contract.

Huge question marks over Kyllington. Has he proved himself to be trusted as a second pairing guy? Not really. Might be a risky sign. Personally I don’t think he owes us anything.

Why are the flames trading everyone for picks; surely there’s no benefit to getting rid of decent players for rookies down the line who have to get up to the standard? Or am I missing the point entirely we don’t have this system in Europe with soccer and rugby, it’s straight up money for players in trading.
We are in a rebuild. To do it right there has to be a good pipeline of prospects. They are preparing for the future. At the end of the day all teams go through periods where their team are not contenders. For a long time the flames have been right in the middle, not great but not bad. Can’t win Stanley cups that way.
Management has decided that the team as constructed isn't good enough to make the playoffs, let alone win a championship so they are trying to get more talented players in our system.
The best way to acquire talent is by drafting it, especially draft picks in the top 10. So, by trading away good players for draft picks the Flames are accomplishing two thing: they are making themselves worse so they get a higher draft pick and they are acquiring more draft picks for more kicks at the can.
Basically, the point is to be bad now so we can be good in the future. The very worst thing is to be stuck in the middle because it's really hard to get out of that.
As has already been mentioned, it is related to rebuilding. The players the Flames have traded in the last ~12 months and there ages are as follows.

The team as it was constructed was a long shot to make the playoffs and there was no realistic path to having a deep playoff run. They needed to take a step back and build a new core group, and the only way for a team like Calgary to do that is through the draft. This will likely take 5 or more years to accomplish, and there is no way any of these players would be part of that team.
To make matters worse, most of these players are pending UFAs and are unlikely to sign a reasonable contract to continue playing in Calgary. Many likely want to play on more competitive teams, and also likely want close to top dollar. From the Flames perspective, these players are not worth what they are asking for.
With that said, the Flames will likely backfill some of these positions to keep the team somewhat competitive, to continue to play structured hockey, mentor the next generation of players, and maintain team morale. I wouldn't recommend buying any of these players' jerseys because they will only be around for a couple years, and are likely to be traded for assets as their short contracts come to an end.

Us trading players for picks is like a soccer team either signing on youth program players to groom (since we can’t get a player until they’re at the age where they’re eligible to play) or paying a small amount for a very young player we believe could be a stud or strong role player with time.
The European soccer system is different in the you join a franchise in your minor league (under 18) and they are built up and sold off to other organizations. Where as all players are on an even (in theory) playing field when entering the league and are drafted into the league. The ownership is all one league, and there is only one other league even close (khl in Russia)
So if we are last in the league this year, we get a better pick at the best player graduating to professional eligibility that year. It’s a common strategy that works and evens out the teams across the league.
