How much do your Boston’s weigh?

This is my parent’s dog! They take him pretty regularly to the vet for his nail clippings/seizures and the vets haven’t said anything about his weight, until I brought up his weight and all they said was that he is “big boned” from what I know, my parents feed him half dry/half wet food (purina lamb cuz he’s allergic to chicken) once a day but does get 1 milk bone after every walk (twice a day).

So I was wondering what you guys think and how big are your Boston’s? I feel like they should be much smaller and skinnier. If you guys feel like he should be on a diet I will definitely let my parents know!

Also, unfortunately my dad bought him at a puppy store (puppy mill) and from what I remember he is a purebred, maybe very inbred so that could play into his looks? Also, I cannot change vets because this is the only vet that satchmo can tolerate and let them pick him up (gets aggressive when trying to pick up or touch feet). Thank you!

I think your parent's dog absolutely needs to go on a vet prescribed diet food to lose weight. I'd probably be asking for blood work to make sure nothing else is happening due to this long term extra weight.

I say to with vet prescribed diet dog food because I tried the store non prescription kind and it was a disaster. Our dog was ravenously hungry and it was misery. The vet diet prescription was night and day. Ours was in Royal Cabin Satiety and it works over time and once they hit the goal weight you need to add some to maintain that weight. Our dog being so small meant that was too much fiber (huge #2) so we swap to start adding in his regular food instead and kind of wean off over time, vet approved because they said we don't want to do half and half of these foods because long term the nutrients aren't right: too much one thing, too little of others.

Anyway as for not swapping vets, I understand but many vets handle spicy dogs well. The obvious truck is to find the best one you can and be upfront that the dog is spicy. I always am and it's only been a problem once at the Vet ER of all places. Our vet was not impressed by that vet because our dog seems wild but he flips a switch if you give him treats. He gets cheese at his regular vet. Other treats at his eye doctor and now he kind of lives going. Yesterday he got a nail trim at the vet by a vet tech and they reported he was perfect, no barking. Bostons can vary in size so the number on the scale isn’t really helpful unless you know the ideal weight for that individual dog. You need to go by body condition score. While Bostons are a more square breed and tend not to have much of a tuck up when viewed from the side as some other breeds, they should have a clearly defined waist when viewed from above and the ribs should be easily felt. That being said, it does look like their dog is likely overweight.

One thing my vet told me is that dog food companies' suggested servings per day is usually incorrect. Especially because the serving suggestions never take into account treats the dog may be given throughout the day. We feed our oldest nearly half of what the bag recommends, and he could still stand to lose a little bit of weight. It's also important to remember that dogs' metabolisms, like people's, slow down as they get older, and a lot of folks don't account for that when feeding.

they definitely do come in different sizes. Mine are s probably on the smaller side and also a female. But he does look like maybe he has some extra weight in his middle area. It's so hard not to give them treats and things. I had a golden retriever who is on prednisone on and off for allergies. the vet allergist told me to watch giving him store-bought treats. He said "every time you give him a milkbone, think of it as giving him a big Mac". of course, he was also referring to the fact that my boy was on prednisone, which could make him gain weight, but it put it into perspective that some of the store-bought treats, pack on the pounds if you give them too many. It doesn't sound like your parents are overdoing the treats, but I don't give my dogs milk, bones, and other store-bought treats every day. I do give them to them a few times a week. The treats I give them daily are more healthy. They love green beans and pretty much any vegetable and fruit. I don't give them a lot because it can be too much for them, I'll give them like a baby carrot or a piece of apple or something like that as a treat. Again, there's nothing wrong with giving him a milkbone, even one a day if they want, but they have to make sure that they're exercising him and watching how much food. I also don't give them my food. not that I don't want to share with them, but I don't want to mess up their diet by giving them human food. Dog food is designed to meet the needs of dogs, but people food is not. It's not easy to limit them because we love them. One other thing I will add is how important it is to keep their weight healthy. I have a plot hound. He didn't look overweight or anything, but I know that he was probably about 10 pounds heavier than he should be for the breed. Was that my dogs wanted during the day so I kind of kept their food bowls full. I had my older golden retriever, and he was used to that, and I didn't want to completely change up his routine because he had started to lose weight. Anyway, when I lost my beautiful golden boy, I started to give my plot what he was supposed to get every day, twice a day. I took him for his annual check up a couple weeks ago and he had lost 10 pounds! He was a perfect weight. My vet said it is absolutely the best and most loving thing you can do for him by getting that weight off of him. It will add years to his life and keep him mobile. Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping their teeth cleaned are the most important things you can do for your dogs!

Mine topped out at 19 pounds, and as they aged they dropped about a pound. The brown one is currently in a cone, and he’s lost about .5 pound in the last few weeks because he has an eye issue. We are trying to get him fattened up. We also tried to fatten up our senior dog in the last year of his life as he probably dropped a full pound.

We only feed them one meal per day which is about a 1 cup of kibble with a bit of chicken and broth. We add a 1-2 meat treats/day as we consume our meals. We only hand feed them real meat. They never liked veggies. And, Bacon gets a little nibble of cheese too. He likes cheese.

Sometimes Bostons look fatter though depending upon positioning, so we really assess their weight when then run/walk. We they are curled up, they look beefy. With a full tummy, they look pudgy.

My little guy ranges from a lean 24 to chunky 27 lbs depending on the season. He is also actually big boned, not fat - several inches taller standing on all fours than some other Bostons he has met.

The dog in this first picture is absolutely overweight. And will be hard on their joints take time off their life when older if not corrected. I had a Boston who was overweight and he had a lot of joint issues when he hit 9, but I slimmed him way down and he’s so much better.

Ideally You should be able to just feel their ribs when glossing your hand over them.

Hi there, my Boston is 4 and he weighs 21 lbs. I included a picture for reference. His mother was on the small side (15 lbs) and father was on the larger side (25 lbs). Edit to add this link to the breed description so you know what the normal size looks like.

Satchmo does look a little heavy to me, so I would ask your parents if they feed him any people food or table scraps and maybe ask how much of his dog food they are feeding him and see if it’s what is recommended for his size on the bag. My pup eats 1/2 cup of food twice a day - the brand is Fromm Small Breed. He also gets occasional freeze dried liver treats, frozen blueberries, and 2 kcal liver training treats on walks. My guy also loves little bites of cucumbers and strawberries. Just some alternatives they could try with Satchmo in place of milkbones, if your parents are open to that.

Also, Bostons love to burn off energy by playing, so if you want to help him stay healthy, you can take him out in the yard and play fetch with him, or play tug of war with a rope toy, which is a great workout too.

You’re the best!! I will definitely tell them to substitute strawberries or anything other than milk bones (that’s such a good idea) and we will definitely try to burn his energy more! I know my dad takes him out for long walks but he cannot physically play with him besides fetch because he’s 77 years old. Thank u!

Please make sure that your Dad knows the signs of heat stroke for a dog. Long walks with his extra weight could be very harmful for him ❣️ I would also ask them to consider trashing the milk bones for treats. My dogs love lightly steamed green beans, and/or carrots for occasional treats. But they almost always get a green vegetable with their meal. (Broccoli, bok choy, green beans) My girl is 11 yr old, never spayed or pregnant and has always weighed 11 lbs.. She's "fun size" like a little candy bar LOL 😁

My boy loves veggies of all kinds too! He will even eat raw Brussel sprouts if I’m chopping them for dinner lol.

And I second the comment about heat stroke, OP. I always bring a water bottle with built in cup for my pup on warmer days and he always drinks the whole thing.

I will let him know about the signs of heat stroke especially now we are going to July soon! And I will definitely tell them to put a green vegetable, satchmo is not picky (clearly) and will eat anything you give him so I feel like that would be a great way to start!

I’m not sure why this showed up on my feed because I have dachshunds, but after browsing comments this is the one! I got a chonky boy after he was already 3-4 and had to go on a diet. I counted his calories and calculated what he needed to lose weight (in healthy way) and swapped out his cookies for fruits and veggies. It helped immensely. Things he liked (if Satchmo is picky): -blueberries -strawberries -apple slices -carrots -cucumbers -butternut squash -watermelon

You can possibly also mix in a tablespoon of canned pumpkin with his dry food instead of doing half wet/dry; pumpkin is great for dog tummies and has a pretty low glycemic index. They usually enjoy it.

My girl is nearly 4 and 22lbs. She was the runt of her litter and her parents were both 25lbs. She’s quite long and tall. She has kibble available always if she needs it (she goes through one bowl of dog food every two weeks so she’s not eating much of it when she does), but gets 3/4 cup of Maev raw dog food skin and coat twice a day. It’s very veggie heavy. She doesn’t get too many treats, but does have a Greenie in the morning to help clean her teeth. She also gets a Kong filled with natural PB twice a week.

Fester is 41 lbs and Ouija is 30 lbs. Our first two Bostons were 14 & 22 lbs, our second pair was 24 & 32 lbs. I’ve seen Bostons of all sizes, as long as they are healthy who cares about their weight.

I agree! It’s weird because his vet hasn’t said anything about his weight until I brought it up and he’s been going since he was a baby. I am still going to make changes in his diet tho and since my sister is coming back from college, she can try her best to slowly play with him and help him loose some weight!

This is my guy, he’s almost 7 and he’s 18 lbs. People sometimes remark that he looks skinny but vet said he’s perfect. You can feel his ribs but they don’t stick out and he has a visible defined waist.

Your parents’ pup is definitely overweight. They’re either giving him scraps from the table or feeding him too much for his meals. Poor dude looks uncomfy 😕

Bostons can be born fairly big sometimes (here’s my 30lb+ BT; naturally big, but lean/muscular, not overweight). That BT is objectively fairly obese, unfortunately. You can tell by the lack of waist taper, the very plump belly, and generally very little in the way of body definition.

If it helps, here’s what I do to keep my boy in shape. He gets one cup of kibble daily, and he gets treats, but only once/twice a day, and I choose healthier options (Blue Buffalo has a good selection). The more unhealthy treats (beggin’ strips, milk bones, etc.) are given sparingly.

Before he recently sustained a spinal injury, I would also take him out on daily hour long walks. He has to eat a little wet food now because of his injury and needs to stay hydrated, so now he gets half a cup of kibble whenever I give him a 3 oz can of wet food.

Your parents' dog is obese, judging from the pictures. r/dechonkers is dominated by cat posts, but does have weight loss advice for both dogs and cats that may be helpful. My boy is 30 lbs, my girl 19 lbs. Some Bostons are just bigger. My boy does not have much fat on him at all though. I free feed them and they eat whenever they want. They both get cheese and PB as treats often. They basically eat the same amount of food and are 10 lbs apart. They are from different breeders.

Thank you. My little girl is brindle, our rescue is black and white. The good thing is, they have known each other their whole lives, so they get along great. It was an easy integration when we rescued her.

My boston was 12 ounces when we got her at 10 weeks. The breeder’s vet had missed giardia… but she got to a very healthy but permapuppy weight of 16 or 17 lbs. She passed suddenly in May at almost the age of 9 and we miss her terribly.

I’m so sorry for your loss, my heart aches for you. I know you are in such dark place after loosing a fur baby, but please hang in there!!!! I wish I had more advice or guidance but it’s a truly heartbreaking loss that will heal with time. I mourned my dog Scooby when the vet misdiagnosed him with cancer and i swear it’s like time stopped, all I did was cry and put all my focus in being there for my dog. I somewhat understand what you are going through but please be gently with yourself and don’t blame yourself

This fella is definitely overweight. My Boston is bigger than average, but you can see his waist, you can see his neck and how it differentiates from the shoulders. Look at that chart the mid posted, your dog is I'm going to say way overweight.

Replace the milkbones with baby carrot chunks or blue berries or something.

And Cut down the food by a lot. My guess is that dog should weigh closer to 23-25 pounds of you're telling the truth that it weighs 30.

my Boston is slim about 21lbs but they can range up to like 25+ lbs. He gets 2 cups a day of the honest kitchen grain free chicken recipe (regular kibble size) and several treats a day 😅 but he’s also very active and I walk him for over an hour every day.

They could try feeding something better. Purina has a lot of fillers and he’s probably getting too many calories for the activity level he has if he’s only going on two walks a day.

My Boston is 19lbs and gets 1/2 cup dry food 2x day. Very limited treats. I did recently make frozen watermelon, banana and Greek yogurt treats that she really likes, so she's getting those sometimes.

He's definitely overweight. I'm surprised the vet didn't say anything about it. I know he's your parents dog, but I'd be having a talk with them about his weight. Older folks tend to have the mindset of giving their dog food to show love, so they probably don't even realize he's overweight. He's definitely getting table scraps, whether they tell you he is or not. Lol.

I'd completely stop the milk bones. He doesn't need a treat every time he goes potty or goes on a walk. Canned green beans with no sodium or baby carrots are a good option as healthy treats.

Also finding out exactly how much dog food he's getting. I'd be willing to bet he's getting way too much food. He probably only needs 1/2 cup twice a day.

Seeing obese animals makes me angry and sad. They are likely in pain, as their joints can’t handle the strain. Ask any severely overweight person how their joints are feeling when they walk.

Dogs especially will eat as much as they are given because of how they are wired. We have the recommended food amount for a reason! OP will hopefully advise her folks on proper feeding.

I really hope he’s not in pain but I understand how his weight can affect his joints and the risks! I am definitely going to make changes and talk to my parents! I’m honestly about to make like a power point or something to show the thread and the research I’ve found about overweight dogs (like the risks and stuff) I do know that they love him so much, so they will definitely make that change I promise! I will also post updated pics of him loosing weight

I’m sure they do! It’s really easy to overfeed dogs - they are so happy when they get treats! But even the treats can be healthy, for example freeze dried stuff. It’s great that you are concerned about him, thank you for that! You need to stress that he will have a better quality of life and potentially live longer. I love animals so much! I want them all to have the best life possible

Pickles is 25-26 pounds but he’s a bit taller than average from what I’ve seen so he still looks pretty slim. He can def get a little chunky if someone heavy hand feeds him or he’s gotten too many snacks (my husband and I caretake for his grandmother so she lives with us and usually can’t resist sharing snacks with him)

Mine is 8 months old and came in hot at 26 lbs at the vet the other day. She said he’s still growing based on a metabolic panel he had done after getting sick eating a flower that was poisonous. He’s a “big boned” guy, too, but I swear the only fat on his body is in his neck wrinkles and jowls.💚

My Boston weighs about 26 pounds, he was 25 for a long time then my father started overfeeding him (I'm so mad about it) and he got up to 26-27. The vet says 25 is perfectly ok for him and he's not overweight however he should get some more exercise in general just as all dogs should. He has a very large chest cavity and is just a big boi, no rolls or anything.

Our 8 yo male BT is 30 pounds. He is muscular and full of energy. We feed him a cup and a half of food spread throughout the day. He does not get human food (except a treat or two when he visits grandma).

Our other BT who passed this year weighed 20-25 pounds. He was also muscular and full of energy. If we allowed him, he would eat an entire bag of dog food a day.

Our vets have always used the chart the Mod posted when we ask about our dog’s weight. They don’t focus as much on the actual number but the shape of the dog.

Mine is supposed to be 15-18 lbs but is 20-23. I suspect someone is leaving food out or sneaking her extra food when I’m not home and I’m very upset about it - she has a bad knee that I’m still saving up for the surgery for and it didn’t cause her issues till she hit 20 lbs. now any time she’s running around playing fetch she goes tri pod mode. I’m upset with my family, to say the least.
