OP will still be wondering if Borderlands 4 will release while standing in line to pick up their preordered copy and they'll still be shit talking the movie even though no one is listening.
Got it in their hands and being like, "I wonder if they will ever make it"
The imagery of this was funny, thank you.
Not that I agree with OP's line of reasoning but do you have any documentation stating the production companies are bankrolled the project? I was under the impression gearbox put up a good bit of the funds they got when the company originally sold to Embracer group. Also to me the only reason to make BL4 in UE4 instead of 5 is not being able to afford UE5. It's one thing for a Fallout New Vegas esq spinoff game like TPS or Wonderlands to not upgrade to a new engine but reusing an engine for the next main line entry feels like a really odd choice.
Also to me the only reason to make BL4 in UE4 instead of 5 is not being able to afford UE5.
Who brought this up? No one in this thread has made mention of the engine, and again, are you trolling or just not that bright? You're suggesting that they might not use UE5 because they... can't afford it? Borderlands, Take-Two (market cap ~$25 billion)'s best selling franchise (other than Rockstar's games and NBA2K), can't find the budget to use the newer version of the engine they use? Also the same UE5 that, to my knowledge, shares the exact same licensing fees as UE4? The same UE5 that Randy Pitchford (CEO of Gearbox) said was "built for a new kind of next generation Borderlands game" (here )? You can't think of any other reason they might not switch to UE5, like time and complexity? You can't fathom the idea of a large project like Borderlands 4 opting not to switch to UE5 because that would derail their development schedule and timeline?
I was under the impression gearbox put up a good bit of the funds they got when the company originally sold to Embracer group.
Your impression is wrong, the Embracer acquires Gearbox newswire has no mention of monetary collaboration between Gearbox and Lionsgate. It mentions a vague collaboration that is far more likely to either be a creative one (Gearbox provides 3D assets, script previews, etc.) or a "they own the franchise and Lionsgate is making a movie with it so technically they are collaborating" one. In fact here is a tweet from Randy Pitchford leaning towards the creative collaboration ("offer resources [3D game assets, like Claptrap or weapons] and IP knowledge"
do you have any documentation stating the production companies are bankrolled the project?
No, because Gearbox bankrolling it would've been mentioned by literally any of the trades or Lionsgate themselves when they acquired the rights in 2015. Lionsgate didn't just buy the distribution rights to the Borderlands movie, they bought the rights to use the IP in their movie (their movie, not Gearbox's) alongside Arad Productions (who, as described by Randy Pitchford, are involved in the making-the-movie-part of production). The first and second billing production companies are Lionsgate and Media Capital Technologies, both companies who literally fund and facilitate the making of movies (MCT's description on LinkedIn literally says "The company provides capital to media and entertainment businesses, including major motion picture studios, significant independent production entities, and preeminent intellectual property rights-holders.")
The movie's budget is being rumored at around $150 million and it is not just fiscally irresponsible for Gearbox to front that money for the movie, it is downright idiotic (I know people hate Randy and call him an idiot but the idea of Gearbox fronting that money is too stupid for even the comically stupid version of Randy that people think of in their heads). Gearbox is a game development studio, not a movie-financing studio. Lionsgate paid Gearbox to use the Borderlands IP in a movie made by Lionsgate and its production partners.
Hmm, well fair enough on the movie side. So Lions gate made the terrible casting choices? I figured Randy just wanted an excuse to hang out with movie stars. As for BL4, a lot of what you've stated is completely irrelevant. Take Two's market cap means nothing considering Gearbox wasn't owned by them when making decisions about the development of BL4. Additionally, UE5 existed when they made the decision to stick with UE4. Interesting though that the licensing is the same price. I guess they literally just made a brain dead decision because they figured they could cash grab faster if they could reuse a bunch of BL3 assets for yet another game. Sad but I can't say I'm surprised the way Randy has been attempting to devalue dlc recently.
Admit it OP you just wanted to make a "Borderlands movie bad" post. I wonder is gearbox going to make a followup to their most profitable title that they've hinted at in the previous entry?
Remember when the new D&D movie and Mario movie were guaranteed to be bad?
Critics bashed the Mario movie. I have no clue what they expected. I went in expecting a movie about an Italian plumber from Brooklyn who jumps on turtle shells and eats mushrooms to grow large. I wasn't disappointed, and neither apparently were the fans.
Yeah! Just like how they stopped making Assassin's Creed games after that movie did poorly! Oh, wait....Well, at least they stopped making Mortal Kombat, Hitman, Street Fighter, Silent Hill, Ratchet and Clank, World of Warcraft, Tomb Raider, Super Mario Bros, Doom and Resident Evil, after their own poorly received movies through the ages. I mean, does anyone even remember those forgotten franchises?
I liked the Tomb Raider films 😩
And the Resident Evil ones are glorious trash 😆
Oh yes! Even the newer ones that aren't Milla Jovovich!
Hell u give me a shitty resident Evil movie and my night is set.
Pepperidge Farm remembers
The games have all done very well, and basically nothing else Gearbox makes does well, there's absolutely no reason to think there is any chance of BL4 not happening.
Here, OP. Take my downvote for your terrible post.
Jesus Christ y'all REALLY want this movie to fail huh? It was funny at first but now it's just borderline pathetic.
That aside, it'll still happen. Borderlands is WAY too profitable to not continue to make it.
Borderlands pathetic one would say!
... shut up and take my up vote 😂
That’s…. A take. Of course there’s going to be a BL4. The movie is going to have no bearing on the video games. And the movie isn’t out, so there’s no real telling how it’ll do.
Well that isn't entirely true. We have an actor in the movie that gave a general ballpark number for the budget of the movie. And based on the fact that theaters eat about 50% of revenue brought in by movies coupled with data about how much movies typically gross we can say with confidence that it would take a miracle for this project to break even. It would have to outperform some marvel movies.
Maybe it'll go the route of the 1st Saw movie. Low budget, hated by critics but became a cult classic.
Casting seems a little off but I'm stoked for the Borderlands movie, from the trailer it looks much better than I was expecting.
This is terrible
No offense but thinking the movie has ANY baring on the game is fucking stupid. 2K and Gearbox only are considered producers insofar as they licensed the property to Lionsgate and the Arad brothers, they didn't spend a dime and aren't in any danger of losing money. If Super Mario Bros. couldn't tank Nintendo and that's widely considered one of the worst movies ever nevermind adaptations then the BL movie flopping isn't gonna hurt Gearbox.
John Borderlands just told me it's cancelled, sorry bud.
John said that? Damn
I know, hard to believe isn't it? Not like John at all.
I'd like to think so, I don't think the Movie is going to affect things either way as I'm pretty sure everyone at Gearbox knows it's going to bomb hard but it's not their money at risk (the rights were sold and bought by someone else weren't they? So they have the risk?).
Well duh
110% going to happen
Also either good or bad I'm still gonna watch the film
I mean c'mon it's Borderlands
They'd make a kart racer out of it and I'd still play it
Did the live action Super Mario Brothers from 1993 kill off Mario games, I don't think it did, did it?
First of all movie is probably not even expected to do very well, it's just one of marketing things for Borderlands in future.
Second of all, just FYI this subs/fanbase opinion on movie doesn't represent reality and this movie is not even done for you.
And lastly, B4 will definitelly happen and franchise each entry sells better than previous one, so you're delusional.
I'm a huge Borderlands fan (probably close to 100+ playthroughs through all games) since the OG but I never played 3 until just recently.
And after playing 3 I think 4 is going to be incredible. I think take2/Gearbox will listen to feedback about players' criticism of story and voice acting. I think we will get a bigger better story AND gameplay will be even better. There is no reason why borderlands 4 wouldn't come out and why it shouldn't be the best game in the series so far.
I started playing 3 after getting the Pandora collection on sale for like 30 bucks. Did they change VAs for Claptrap? The voice they gave him sounds really forced and somehow made him even MORE annoying and pretentious than he was in 2. At least in 1 he was more of a minor annoyance than anything, 2 he was a bit pretentious but I felt some pity for him after the birthday quest. 3 I just find him to be unlikeable at all.
He is changed. The original voice actor David Eddings who voiced Clap for the original games as an employee of Gearbox and apparently didn't get paid for his voice acting as extra. Gearbox had some program where they invited and encouraged employees to do voice acting. From what I could gather he had a falling out with the Gearbox Ceo because he wanted to get paid for all the previous games in addition to the new game. He also accused the ceo Randy Pitchford of assaulting him. Eddings turned down the offer to return for 3 because he didn't feel like it was fair.
I agree with you that the new voice actor isn't anywhere near as good. And Claptraps voice is so iconic and iconic to the series. After playing 3 for a while it stopped bothering as much but he is also not in 3 in general as much as he is in the other games. Maybe they can get Eddings back for 4.
Doubt it will even affect Borderlands 4’s production if it flops. But if the movie is great and receives a lot of support it might be another cyberpunk edge runners situation.
Maybe they’ll shit the bed on the movie and make a fuckin triple A blowout with BL4 who knows. Not too hopeful though.
Wow, this is the worst take I’ve seen in a while on this sub.
The Doom film was a flaming pile of shit and that didn’t kill the franchise at all!
I rest my case.
regardless of how bad the BL movie will be, its going to make a shit ton of money. the majority of viewers are not gonna be borderlands fans. about 15% of the viewer base will be BL players, 65% will be chinese citizens, then the remainder will be popcorn munchers
It's basically a money printing machine. Why the fuck would it not get made?
You’re a silly goose. Don’t worry about it. Plus, the movie looks like it could be a fun time!
Pessimistic much. Who knows, the movie may be amazing.
We already have had teaser images for bl4, and very reliable rumors that some content creators have already played a build. It’s coming out, late this year or next year.
Where are these images and which CC said that?
Oh sick, I like your optimistic timeline!!
I wanna know where they saw this BL4 teaser and which CC have played builds allegedly
Yeah, but my hopes for quality aren't too high after 3. Wonderlands was decent enough though I guess. Just get some better writers and don't make it so cringey and lame.
I think BL4 is like a 50/50 chance of coming out. The series has been on a downhill for a while now
Do you have anything to back this up with or is this just “I didn’t like the last one so series is in trouble?”
AvA bAd gAmE BAD
I have been playing borderlands since BL1 came out, I have played each and every single one of the games to death. It’s just a fact that story wise and content wise then series has never matched up to BL2. Quality of life changes have been made but that’s just because gaming as a whole has come a long way. Who knows if or when BL4 will come. I remember when getting another borderlands after 2 was literally just whispers and legend. The series has been through a lot and they have provided us with more than anyone initially thought we’d get
BL as an IP isn’t just gonna die out that easily, it’s borderlands a staple in gaming. The fact a movie is being made proves the want to keep the franchise going.

Is this a troll post or are you serious? Why would the movie doing well critically or financially have any impact on the development of Borderlands 4 especially when the movie is being bankrolled by movie production companies? Borderlands 3 was 2K's fastest-selling title ever and other than NBA2K and Rockstar's games, Borderlands is Take-Two's top selling franchise.
Take-Two literally just purchased Gearbox so they could have full ownership of the Borderlands IP and in that same announcement Gearbox said they are working on the next Borderlands game.
