Spoke Length

Hi all could you please give me some advice.

My front wheel is a left spoke length of 284.4mm, I ordered 284. Spokes on the right should be 285.5, do I get 284 or 286?

My rears left should be 284.4 I ordered 284mm and the right should be 282.9 do I get 282 or 283?

Thanks

Headset Play

So I've built a bike and the bottom section of the headset has some back and forth play, I don't really notice it when riding unless I brake hard and then I feel the slight movement of the fork. When stopped I can physically move my fork back and forth. This is from a new no name carbon frame that came with all the bearings and accessories. I have a few questions about it:

  • Is this possibly just an installation error? I didn't use a crown race setting tool or a headset cup pressing tool, I just did it all by hand.

  • Could it be a manufacturer issue/defect?

  • Would it be safe to ride on it as is? I don't ride too hard, mostly just longer distance leisure trips.

Any help would be appreciated, this is the first time I've built on a frame from scratch, I've only worked on older bikes in the past.

An algorithm for finding matching groupset parts?

So I would like to replace my current 1x8 speed Altus groupset to something more robust and "premium". This is how I currently understand the process of composing the groupset:

  • The rear hub width determines the type of cassette (the number of speeds, NOS)
  • Once the cassette is picked, you can pick a chain and a rear derailleur with the same NOS (or more?)
  • You generally need a different shifter if the new derailleur's NOS is different (like 8 -> 10)
  • Preferably, the new cassette's sprockets should have the same number of teeth

Is my understanding correct? Please share some wisdom.

Hi community could I please have some help choosing spokes.

My rims are 585 ERD and my hubs are these Shimano.

FH-QC500-MS

Flange distance (mm) 55.45

Offset (mm) 7.6

P.C.D. left / right (mm) 50.5/51.5

Flange diameter left / right (mm) 59.3/60.3

HB-QC400

Flange distance (mm) 60.2

Offset (mm) 5.3

P.C.D. left / right (mm) 44/44

Flange diameter left / right (mm) 52.8

Can anybody help me work out the spoke length needed please?

1st DIY Bike Project: Looking For Headset Advice

Hello. This my first time posting here: I am kicking off a summer project to build my first ebike. I settled on a cruiser style bike. I purchased a Santak frame and a triple tree fork frame so far. Now I'm trying to figure out the right headset needed to mount this headset properly. Maybe even a tutorial to follow. Here are some pictures of the tube dimensions I'm working with here: https://imgur.com/gallery/2EX6YKI I'd certainly appreciate any help or guidance you may have to offer. Please and thank you.

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new bike and don’t plan on getting another one anytime soon. I'm looking for recommendations on upgrades, particularly wheels, tires, and a saddle.

I've read reviews about Superteam wheels and they seem promising, but I'm curious if there are better options at a similar price point. As for tires and a saddle, I have no idea where to start, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

FH-MT500 vs FH-MT401 Microspline Hubs

Which is the better hub? The MT401 with sealed bearings or the MT500 with cup and cone?

Custom frame ATC and fork questions

I am working on a custom gravel/light trail/bikepacking bike. After lots of searching for bikes I'd like the emulate the look, feel or geo of, I found this Curve GMX+ and want to match most of the geo numbers. Both the frame and fork will be fully custom. I'd like to give myself the option of trying out a 100mm travel suspension fork at some point down the road, which will have closer to a 520mm axle to crown, as opposed to the 430mm atc on the Curve's fork. I know that if I just copy all of the Curve's geo numbers and then stick a longer atc fork on I will be messing up the geometry but I'm certain there is a way I can design with this in mind and keep relatively the same bb height, hta and sta. i just don't know what that change(s) is. Thanks for reading and helping with this project. I can't wait to show reddit the build when it's all said and done!

What's a good frame for high speed?

Would a Walmart bike around $100 be able to remain stable at 30 miles per hour? Also, what things should I look for in a frame to maximize stability?

Alfine double or single guard crankset

In my quest of converting my derailleur to an alfine hub I am getting lost in the component options...

I can get the alfine crankset in a single or double chainguard version. Since I am using a chain tensioner (i have vertical dropouts) I will need the sprocket with chainguard (CS-S500) according to the Shimano manual.

On some websites they mention that if you use the CS-500 sprocket you also need to use the double chainguard crankset. However the Shimano manual or website does not mention this...

Do you guys know if this is really the case or can I also use the single chainguard crank?
