Can a prepared man who's expecting a pitbull attack win against a pitbull?

Every man has a plan until he's punched in the face. These animals are way too unpredictable and game to truly prepare for. And that should be the eye opener. Most people are NOT prepared and are NOT mentally prepared to do what they need to survive. These are NOT normal dogs. A normal dog isn't gonna lunge at a bison and get launched Super Smash Style and come back for more. But pits will.

If you watch videos of attacks even when the dog starts at a distance it closes very quickly. How long it takes you to notice, identify, process the situation and then begin to act means you're starting your defense very late in the engagement. The dog has comparatively had an eternity to be ready and fully commit.

These dogs are also hard to grab. Short coated with squat, muscular bodies. Maybe there's no collar. I've had to break up a pitbull fight with another dog. It's very fast, hard to get a good hold and the party you were going for that didn't have teeth suddenly does. That dog wasn't even going after me intentionally.

My husband tackled about a 50 lb pitbull that was loose and rushing my dachshund and came out ok. It’s hard to say if the dog was hell bent on attacking though, he just saw it running for our dog while he was walking her and didn’t want to find out. He got a long cut going up his arm that we don’t know if it was a claw or a tooth scrape.

You need some like medieval knight armor and weaponry against those foul beasts

If you’re mentally prepared to endure that pain and have a plan to disrupt the dog’s plan, whether it’s by wrestling it down, eye gouging, whatever…you’ll probably escape with just wounds. But you’ll have to lay a beating on it that is above and beyond what most rational humans are accustomed to or comfortable with if the dog goes full berserk and won’t unlatch. The pain of an animal with a strong bite tugging hard at a low center of gravity will shock your nervous system, and if it gets your face or neck things get complicated.

If you watch police shows, check out how quickly K9’s suck the fight out of people, and then realize that they aren’t trying to kill but rather are just trained to subdue via direct application of pain to extended limbs.

I think any such adult could realistically not get mauled to death 1v1 with a non bully breed dog, if it was just one, and he had ample human tools and his human-smarts, to outsmart the dog into either: stalemate or victory.

If it's a bully breed, well. Good luck.

If it's more than one dog of mostly any kind? Good luck.

If it's a group of bully type breeds: say your prayers, and wish for good luck.

It's pretty dire. No gaurantees. I'm a tom boy and have had to fend off a few dogs here and there. You kind of have to fight like an animal while outsmarting them into favorable conditions to even draw a stale mate.

On us humans: even though we are "large" we aren't strong. We gave up muscle density to walk up right and even if we are very fit and strong, we aren't as strong as animals, average to average. Dogs get more leverage with their weight and quadruped stance, and that is why they can 1.) Jump up 2.) Grab us 3.) Pull us down to their level 4.) Severely injure us.

The only thing that really save us are: our ability to throw, our ability to climb trees (reasonable, and with luck) and our ability to buy us time. Case in point, if I was being attacked, I could theoretically back up into a tree, climb it, and toss a stick at the dog to drive it away. That's a stale mate.

Now que in that dogs are very dense little gremlins from hell, add in the fact that bully dogs are the densest hunks of meat to have jaws, and factor in their broken ability to destroy US as animals 1v1 and then it's clear why we don't want them around.

Smaller dogs don't stand a chance. Smaller animals don't stand a chance. Children and the youth, won't stand a chance. Elderly, don't stand a chance. Adults: possibly chance of survival.

In both of my close calls, thankfully being acutely aware of my surroundings saved me. I saw them charging at me and my dog from pretty far away and immediately yelled as loud and aggressively as I could “NO! BACK OFF!” over and over, almost like barking. They still approached but slowed down and did not physically attack. I did not retreat or turn my back on them, instead I made myself look bigger and kept yelling - then they finally backed off and me and my dog went on our way as I continued looking at the dog and muttering at it aggressively. If it got to the point of contact, my plan was to kick it as hard as I could, get my dog’s leash around the aggressor’s neck and use my foot to hold the back of its neck or sit on its back while I pulled the leash to block its airway (since this was before I found this subreddit and didn’t know loose dogs were such a threat in my new neighborhood, I wasn’t yet carrying pepper spray or a knife).

Supposedly lifting their rear legs has a great chance of making them let go than anything else. My BIL had a Pit that attacked his lab and latched on. Him along with his two sons struggled for minutes trying to force it to let go. We are talking about all sorts of beating. The only thing that worked for them is when they shoved a hose down it’s throat and turned it on

I'm with everyone else here and going with maybe. Pitties fight to kill and most people aren't prepared for a sudden life and death struggle. Not getting dragged to the ground so they can go for your throat/face is obviously key and stopping that is going to be easier for someone in their prime. But, mentally, it's still hard for anyone to get over the fear factor.

(That said, our mail carrier stopped a charging pitbull with pepper spray alone. Happy ending on that one, the pitbull was put down.)

So a lot of nuances. End of the day, I'm a big fan of carrying some kind of weapon.

Absolutely, have respect but don’t be afraid to stand your ground. You can look up weak points and strategies to deal with them and protect your loved ones.

Lol. They seem to easily drag 105 pound women around with ease. I've never fought a pit bull. I remember catching a small shark once. Just a couple feet long. I thought I would manhandle it to get the hook out but I was mistaken. A creature with all muscle, like a pit bull, is formidable and will twist and turn no matter how hard you hold them.

Maybe if you have a weapon.

Well I definitely think it's possible, but there are so many variables to consider: - Do you have a knife or other effective weapon (aka stronger than pepperspray) - Where does the pit grab you on the first take? On the legs coming from the front? Or on your neck coming from behind? - The dogs actual weight and muscle mass - How deep in "the zone" is the dog?

Climb your ass on top of a car, that’s how a lot of victims get to safety. These things can jump fences but are somehow too stupid to get onto a car. Maybe they don’t get traction on the car body?

The best thing I've seen by far: put the mf in a choke hold. That is the only way I've seen people actually shorten a pitbull attack.

I have successfully choked out a 70 lb pitbull that was attacking my dog. I'm not sure if I'd make the same decision again. Only reason I was successful is because how much I train. Took squeezing it for almost a minute to let go then another 30 sec to pass out. This was a full on choke hold squeezing max power.

I think many people do not expect an attack and do not have any thoughts about what they would do in case of an attack. I believe many people are afraid of hurting the dog or think it can be rationalized with. A child or frail, elderly person simply does not have the size or strength. Pit bulls sense weakness and will actively seek out weaker victims.

In my experience, it is possible to fight off a pit bull attack if you are smart, confident and aggressive enough. Do not be afraid and do not panic.

I am a 5'7" woman. My weight has been from 130-180#. I have back and joint problems and I do not work out. I have fought off several pit bulls, including my own pit-mix.

Don't waste your time punching them. They don't feel it and you'll only get tired. Kicking might distract them momentarily but they will quickly learn to ignore it. Gouging their eyes or jamming a finger in their ear will stun them for a few seconds and give you time to plan your next move.

Choking is by far the best way to stop a pit bull. If you get one in a headlock or chokehold, make sure they don't slip out of it. Using their collar works too. Lift them off their front feet so they are unbalanced and disadvantaged.

I have also stopped an attack by grabbing a leg and lifting it as high as I could. The dog saw I was not afraid and I was willing to fight. It didn't make another move. It just sat there and stared at me.

When I had my pit-mix, one of the fun games we would play is he would hold a rope toy in his mouth. I would take hold of the ends, one on each side of his mouth, I'd lift him off his front feet and then I'd start to twirl. With very little effort from me, he would take to the air - swinging around in a circle. This is just me but if I ever tried that "lift them by their back legs" thing and it kept trying to fight, it would be going for a spin.

Not without getting bit. But I'm very certain that if you can lift it, you can beat it.

The only dude that I saw survive two coming at him was by jumping on top of a car and smacking the shit out of them with a board he found.

Id say against one you would, against two or more I dont think so, not without a lot of damage at leasat.

I remember as a kid that they had someone come into our school and speak to us about what we should do if we were ever attacked by a dog. I distinctly remember them telling us to curl up into as small of a ball as you can, and to put your hands over your ears while grabbing the back of your head and bringing your elbows together in front of your face to protect your throat, face, and ears.
