In your opinion, what's the best fruit as a snack?
nothing tops cold, crunchy grapes
Try freezing them, it’s even better.
I freeze the bad ones for summer snacking, the good crunchy ones get eaten immediately.
They don’t last long enough for me to freeze them, they basically get inhaled
Frozen watermelon for the first time last week....game changer.
I wish, I have sensitive teeth and anytime I bite something frozen I lose part of my soul
I froze some overnight, put them in a cooler and drove to the beach. By the time we got there, they were just thawed enough to be amazing. It's a staple beach treat now.
Once the hot weather hits, I make sure to always have grapes in the freezer.
I downed an entire bag over the weekend while gaming.
I have no idea why I read this as "downloaded an entire bag" and was quite confused about your mental well-being.
Nature’s Jellybeans!
I gotta agree man. A nice ripe mango cut into cubes is 👌
Not even cut up. Straight off the seed like a slut, lol.
I cannot eat a mango non sexually. They’re so good.
My teeth .. or rather gums, disagree. So fibrous and hard to eat and get all over the face and makes it itchy on top of all aaah
Umm... Mango isn't supposed to be itchy. Maybe you're allergic.
A block from me a guy sells mangos in a cup with tajin... Ahhh... He keeps them really cold and it's the best snack coming home from work!
That and his horchata are my happy place after work
Dried mango slices are like crack to me
Agree 💯
Had my first mango (by itself) while camping this weekend - it was amazing.
Banana gang 🍌🍌
It has a point at the top for ease of entry. It's just the right shape for the human mouth. It's chewy, easy to digest, and it's even curved toward the face to make the whole process so much easier.
And, it comes with its own portable container that helps prevent damage and contamination when on the go.
Peaches. Peach season is quickly coming and I hope they're good. Unfortunately the last few peach seasons they've sucked, they're dry, they're grainy. IDK what's been going on with peaches but I hope to finally have a good juicy sweet peach
Peaches have the highest highs of any fruit, in my opinion. A good peach is just perfection. So juicy, delicious, etc.
But they are not great pretty frequently.
I once ate a gigantic, perfect peach while on a hallucinogen. I refer to that experience as "The God Peach." No other peach will ever compare, but I still enjoy them when they're nearly so good. That one, though--sun-ripened, big as both my fists, juice just pouring down my chin--unmitigated delight.
Strawberries. When they’re good they almost taste like they should be bad for you
I clearly haven’t been having good strawberries then.
My grandparents used to grow blueberries and those are divine straight from the source. So flavorful.
Also, tomatoes are technically a fruit and a good beefsteak tomato straight from the garden with just salt and pepper on it? Divine.
Oh my lordy. This brought me back to a memory of when I was at a Farmer's Market in Charleston, South Carolina. I bought several large, locally grown peaches.
After a long day of wandering the city, I found myself craving a peach at 1 am. I was staying at a super tiny hostel and didn't want to awkwardly sit in the tiny common room area eating a peach at 1 am, so I went to a random McDonalds a couple blocks down that was closed and had outdoor tables. I sat and took a bite of the peach, not knowing what to expect because, as you said, peaches are often disappointing.
My heavens. Oh my god, just thinking about it right now makes me salivate. That first bite was...orgasmic. I can't even express aptly with words how absolutely fucking amazing the peach was. And I scarfed down all 3 I had purchased within about 5 minutes.
I seriously daydream about those peaches sometimes.
I never really understood peaches until I went to a peach orchard. A perfectly ripe peach is sublime, and will bruise if you look at it wrong which is why you never see them in grocery stores. Also, the orchard near me makes a soft serve ice cream out of their peaches that is the best ice cream I've ever had.
I will never forget the one and only time I ate a perfectly ripened peach that I picked off the tree. The flavor and texture are NOTHING like what you get at the store. The same can be said for most fruits since they have to be picked early so they "ripen" at the store, but peaches were definitely the boldest difference.
If I weren't a village kid I'd just think that peach is simply shit tier fruit with the ones they sell at stores.
At home we always got it from our own tree and honestly right now I can't even recall any other fruit that has the same sweetness. It's like getting kissed by mother nature herself.
Now I've been living in a big city for like 15 years and I don't even eat peaches here because it's just disgusting.
Good peaches are too juicy and you have to wash yourself after.
Right and they’re amazing tasting
🎶Millions of Peaches… peaches for me🎶
Rode with my dad in the truck though Georgia and South Carolina one summer back when I was in high school. We stopped at this little roadside stand and got a basket of fresh Peaches. You had to eat them with a napkin under your chin. It was pure heaven.
Maybe I'm weird, but I fucking love just grabbing a fork and digging in to a can of Del Monte peaches.
Peaches are great (so juicy), will have to get some next time I'm out.
Apple
One of the few fruits you don't even have to peel. Just wipe it clean and eat. If it's already clean, just eat. Or you can be a bad ass and cut slices off and then eat them off the knife.
My grandma has dentures and she eats her apple with a knife lol I always tell her she’s a pirate when she does it
With sharp cheddar
Pink Ladies
Honeycrisp!!
Cosmic Crisp for days
our Costco is selling (mini) crates of organic honeycrisp and I'm going through about one per week right now
This guy fruits
respectfully, I have to disagree with your 'best on-the-go-snack.' I think grapes are by far the best fruit for this category. There's no cutting involved, you can easily pop one into your mouth, they're not messy where you have to wash your hands, for the most part there arent' any seeds or pits you have to discard, and you can portion how however much you want.
Grapes are made to eat on-the-go.
Absolutely correct. I love a good pear, but the best pears are so juicy it runs down your chin while eating them. Not dignified enough for an on the go snack.
Pears get too banged up too quickly to be useful on the go snacks… oranges are obvi the answer here with their natural protective casing.
oranges are obvi the answer here with their natural protective casing.
Are a bugger to peel tho unless very ripe.
Tangerines or clementine's tho... next level. Better flavor and you can snack on them better - since a whole one is just a snack as opposed to a whole orange.
I agree with your assessment of mangoes. They are the best, but the lack of variety in the US is depressing. I spent last summer in Pakistan and there would be entire new species of mangoes coming into the market every two weeks as they all ripened at different times, and every single species was better than all of the ones found in Indian stores in the US, let alone the ones found in regular American stores. My son hates the heat and was dreading going to Pakistan for the summer, but ask him today and he'll want to go just for the mangoes alone. Kid would eat like six a day.
But if you're in the US and want halfway decent mangoes, go to an Indian grocery store and get the fat ones that have a mix of red and yellow color for the ripe ones. You'll get a box of ten for $10 or $15. Don't get the thin bright yellow ones. When you buy them, they'll be in stacked boxes. It's sort of a minor faux pas, but feel free to mix and match from different boxes to get all ripe ones. You want each mango to be mostly red and yellow with minimal green and sort of hard when you put pressure on it. Sort of like a good avocado that hasn't become too ripe.
If you do end up with mostly green ones because it's early in the season or you don't want to mix and match, leave them in your garage to ripen or on a counter near some sunlight to fully ripen. If the mango is ripe, then you can peel it and cut the innards into cubes to eat with a fork or cut it into strips and use the skin like a scoop to scrape the innards off with your teeth. Like orange slices. If it's become too ripe and won't do well to cut, then just squeeze it carefully and use the seed inside to turn the whole thing into a pulp while try not to break the skin. Open up a little pocket at the stem and suck out the pulp, then pull out and scrape off the seed with your teeth and then peel it open to eat the rest of the innards. This is a messy way to eat it but is the most fun.
My favorite are the atulfo mangos. Here in CA we also have those giant mangos but the atulfo are perfection.
I love the texture of dragon fruit, but it has the most disappointing flavor. You'd think something like that would blow your mind like a perfectly ripe and juicy mango, but it was almost bland in comparison.
Haven't had a red one, only the white.
Mangoes and pineapples are some of the tastiest fruits but they're also a minor pain in the ass to peel and cut up. Peaches also have great flavor and you can just bite right into them.
They even come in their own packaging, which is easy to open and is compostible.
Literally nature's energy bar
This is the right answer.
Strawberries for sure.
Had to scroll way too far to see a fellow strawberry bro. Easily the best
Right? They're the best fruit by far. Bite sized, sweet with a bit of tart, a million cultivars to try, easy to grow at home even if you only have a single window.
Strawberries are the real super fruit.
watermelon.
Watermelon. Uncontested. On a hot day it’s the most refreshing and delicious snack there is.
I think melons are a vital part of survival on hot days. It's got some good vitamins and minerals, but really it's the high water and fiber content. That fiber helps regulate the water absorption from your gut so you do much better with what you drink. Now, having said that, I prefer the texture and flavor of a nice honeydew.
I always forget how much water is in them and then I end up peeing all night. At my age, you gotta stop the watermelon by 4pm.
That’s so funny to me.
Absolutely right.
I love watermelon with cucumber and fresh mint. I could eat a huge amount
Insanely low caloric density! You can eat a ton, feel full, and maybe have eaten 100 calories
Living in CA, I can extend my watermelon fetish for many months. I eat it every day. I know how to pick them too: yellow, not white bottom with claw marks from insects/animals who know they are sweet. Put one on your ear and smack it! It should go thwap/thud like a hollow sound.
You're welcome.
Like eating and drinking at the same time.
Apple is also the best fruit for an on the go snack. Requires no storage, and is durable enough to just toss in a bag and leave it till you need it. Bananas are too susceptible to bruising
Blueberries
Blueberries from the freezer on a miserable hot day. No contest.
There's a little organic blueberry farm in Michigan. People line up for miles for these blueberries. They're almost the size of small cherries and the sweetness is beyond anything you've ever tasted. Season is short tho, so I freeze a shitload and use in muffins and for ice cream topping in winter months
My dog goes apeshit for blueberries
I grew up hating blueberries, but now I could eat a whole pack in one sitting😂
We would have them at halftime in the summer during soccer tournaments.
Pickels if it was super hot.
Half sour pickles are my late July/August secret weapon, right when I get an overabundance of cukes from the garden. They've got the fiber to help with water absorption, salt to replace electrolytes and they're probiotic.
Honorable mention: Clementines
Pineapple for sure
Cherries
Ugh yessss. I could eat them all day every day. Just wish they weren’t so damn expensive where I live.
So true. The grocery store near me sells these fat black cherries from a nearby orchard, they're only available for a brief time due to the season and limited amount so I grabbed a pint. I didn't pay any attention to the price until some time later when I went back for more...oops.
They were indeed pricey, like "that was a one-time thing" kind of expensive, but they ruined me on commercial cherries forever. They were really that good, hopefully I can find something similar at a farmer's market.
Washington Raniers are the best. I noticed some cherries in my grocery store and as soon as I eyeballed them, I knew they wouldn't be sweet: too bright red instead of dark sweet red!
Cherries are definitely my favorite, really can't wait for them to be in season again
The pits are annoying though
Yeah, but summer when you get to spit the pit in your backyard. Freedom!
Banana
100%. No spray factor, self contained, easy to tell when they’re ripe, and entirely enjoyable with no tools. Plus I can’t think of another fruit that tastes like them and meets all those criteria (but I’m also not an expert)
It has a lot going for it, but it's not refreshing, which is what I want from fruit. Some juiciness.
That lack of juiciness is what appeals to me about bananas as a quick snack because it gives the impression of being more filling than something that feels like it's made mostly of water like a watermelon for example.
Also, banana cake is the shit (except for the part where it makes you unable to shit).
except for the part where it makes you unable to shit
Dude...you need to eat more fiber. Banana cake should not bind you up.
And they only cost around $0.19
This is obviously the winner. It's compact, no tools needed for peeling, easy to eat and contains a lot of energy. :)
How much could it cost, ten dollars?
I've literally lost 20 lbs this month switching my diet, my go-to lunch is PB and Banana. Filling, delicious, easy to make and low budget.
Right? It’s perfectly contained and there are so many flavour options.
Raspberries are the healthiest: next to no calories, full of nutrients. And they're super refreshing.
im happiest with a bowl of crisp green grapes and fresh ripe raspberries
Just thinking about raspberries got a seed stuck in my teeth. I love raspberries, but man those seeds are annoying.
Raspberries but only if you pick them yourself. My old house had HUNDREDS of raspberry bushes in the trees. Absolutely smacked.
Kiwi. Comes in it's own little cup. Just wish they were bigger.
Like biting into a big spider abdomen
This sentence ruined my life
Right? I'm here trying to eat a bowl of spiders and now I'm thinking about kiwis. Gross.
You could’ve just kept that to yourself
I could have gone all day without reading that.
Golden kiwis are otherworldly good.
But do you ever eat the skin while making hard eye contact with another human being?
I love kiwis, but they make my mouth itchy.
omg yesss
I was gonna say kiwi cuz I fucking love kiwi, but I’m allergic to it or something cuz it always makes my mouth feel itchy/made my mouth bleed once (the fruit part, not the skin)
Clementine, easy to peel, super tasty, can throw the peel at people
Pears. God I love a good pear. It tastes like nothing else and nothing taste like it.
And how is this so far down in the comments?
Comice pears are the best !
Mangoes are the ultimate snack fruit. They're sweet, juicy, and you get to feel like a tropical explorer every time you slice one up. Plus, if you're really dedicated, you can get that perfect Instagram-worthy mango hedgehog.
they are delicious but they're just a pain to cut/peal and get that big stone out
They're also incredibly difficult to find perfectly ripe.
Apple
Apples with peanut butter, strawberry’s with peanut butter
thinly slicewd granny smith apples with a sharp white chedder on buttered white bread
Dried mango!! Always the best snack for me!!
With some tajin on there!
Grapes. A bag of grapes lasts me about a day and a half.
Berries. I pair blueberries with parmigiano reggiano cheese as an afternoon work snack. Grape tomatoes are also excellent and easy to snack on, followed by grapes.
Watermelon
Cherry tomatoes
Just taste-wise? Kiwis. They're not the easiest to eat though
Look up kiwi berries. Similar flavor, but you can eat them like grapes.
this might be the greatest thing ever
Don’t get your hopes up. I love kiwi’s and got excited about kiwi berries. They do not taste the same IMO.
They actually are. Skin is perfectly edible, and it might seem it tastes bad with all that hair and not, but when actually eaten, it tastes perfectly fine.
Frozen blueberries. They’re not sticky, taste great, last a while, you don’t feel obliged to eat more than you want like an apple or an orange, and you don’t deal with pits or seeds. Best of everything.
In my humble opinion, it's grapes. You can get a mix of colours, portion size is easy to control so no waste / storage issues. Even better, you can freeze them in ice cubes so that they last longer / you eat less! Go team grapes 👌
If pre cut? Pineapple. If not? Grapes or bananas.
pear
Plums, taste great and refreshing.
As a pot smoker, I'm a big fan of the cuties (clementines). When I'm high they give me a nice activity, they are juicy and quench my cotton mouth, and when I peal them they make my pot fingers smell citrusy fresh. I can also have like 6 of them and feel guilt free about it.
Orange slices 🍊
Gonna have to go Avocado on this one…
Grapes. They are quick and easy and you don’t have to prep them. Plus they are yummy!
Blueberries or gala apple
Raspberries
Nice crisp sweet apple.
But a very ripe peach is great if you have a napkin.
Asian pears with almond butter.
Small cubes of mango
Pears
I tried frozen persimmons and they were amazing. My great Uncle had a bunch so they cut them into strips and froze. Unbelievable flavor, better than dried mangoes.
probably mangos 🥭 or oranges 🍊
Ripe blueberries. Very low in calories and taste like candy. Berries are the way to go but blueberries that feel like they’re about to pop are the best
Watermelon
jackfruit
Mango
Depends.
On the go - apples, pears, banana
At home - watermelon
Halos/Cuties (tangerines). Delicious, juicy and come in their own easy to remove wrapper
Mangoes are my go to fruit snacks. Perfect for a your day to day.
Fresh jackfruit, if you can get it where you live. It's a pain to get out of it's husk/shell thing since it's got a glue-like coating, but well worth the effort. I love the texture of it too, I've always thought of it as like eating a juicy flower petal.
Tomatoes, with a little salt or italian dressing
Mango
Banana or apple 🍎🍌
I love pineapple
Apples. They taste great and last a long time. They are great for grab and go as you can throw them in a bag without worrying too much about them getting smashed. They come in a variety of flavors and sweetnesses. They keep the doctor away. What’s not to love?
Cantaloupe!
Mangoooooo
It's not just my opinion, but backed by scientific studies, berries are the best. They have some of the most diverse spreads of nutrients out of all the fruits. Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Kiwi, Gooseberry. I'm not religious but sometimes berries make me question things as they are just so well tailored for human consumption.
Blueberries
Blackberries for sure!
banana ,tasty and very nutritious
Pineapple
Pineapple
grape
