What's a new trend that's doing a lot damage that people don't realize?
Normalizing plastic surgery, fillers and botox for teens.
I would even say normalizing this for adults. I get wanting to look your best, but I wish as a society we could be okay with our unique features and not worry so much about vanity.
A coworker of mine who’s younger than me (25 at the time, 26 now) said that she has lip fillers. It came up because another coworker mentioned she would consider getting Botox when and if she starts getting wrinkles around her eyes, and I was telling her how bad it is for her (it’s literally a neurotoxin being injected into your face that has caused nerve damage for people), and that most (if not all) cosmetic surgery is best to be avoided unless it’s necessary (burn victims, certain dental work). That’s when the other one piped up saying she probably would do it, and she already has lip fillers because she “needed” them. Both of them are very beautiful and going under the knife would probably only detract from their looks (granted, I don’t know what the other one looked like without them, as she’d gotten it before I met her).
I agree with your take completely - I’m all for plastic surgery if there’s an actual need like you said (car accident, burn, post-mastectomy) but people look at it so casually as if it’s not a major surgery. Also, I follow an account called nevertox and it talks all about the dangers of Botox. Botulism poisoning is not something you want to mess around with and I can’t believe so many people willingly inject this stuff into their body. I’ll take the wrinkles any day.
I mean, there’s a whole industry that wants people to believe it’s safe so they’ll get it, and many people will try to minimize the risk in their mind because they’re so obsessed with looking a certain way.
