I am showing some first-time visitors around the city. They want to try “the best deli in town”. We only have time to visit one. Which should I choose?
Note: Canter’s is out of the question. Very mid. Overrated.

I think it's straight up wrong to say it's better "by far". Brent's is awesome.
That said, I'm much more likely to take a tourist to Langer's because it's a more convenient location.
I second Langer’s. The food and the “experience” is great, but any tourists will definitely get their glimpse of what makes Los Angeles so great and so awful at the same time. The homeless crazies are always shambling around the area, like permanent ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ extras.
I suppose Langer’s is in a more convenient location because it’s not deep in the valley… but Langer’s location is still shit. Last time I brought my out-of-town family there, we parked in the Langer’s parking lot and between the lot and the restaurant we encountered a person openly smoking something from a crack pipe. The lot is down the street, about a half block from the restaurant.
While we were in there waiting on our food, a crazy woman wandered in and started shouting at another patron, threatening him etc. Cops were called and she was arrested
It was an eventful meal but I won’t be going back anytime soon.
Daughter’s Deli is just as good IMO, and in a far better part of town. They have their own parking lot and it’s owned by a Langer daughter.
This is why I had to take my family to Canters. At least there its manageable. MacArthur Park looks positively apocalyptic at times.
Daughter’s Deli is so good!
I live in Woodland Hills. I’m never going to Brent’s again. Langer’s, all day.
I've never made it out to Brents.
I try my best to avoid the MacArthur Park area.
Have you tried Daughter's Deli?
Never heard of it. Where is it located? I don’t think Brent is worth the trip. There’s Wexler’s in Santa Monica. They’re decent.
Daughter's Deli is in West Hollywood on Sunset and La Cienega. It's owned by Trisha Langer.
Ha ha. She served me at Langer’s! Thanks!
This is my choice as well. Brent’s is great if you’re out that far, and while Langer’s is delicious it’s overpriced, they nickel & dime you on top of it, and it’s in a sketchy enough area to make tourists rightfully uncomfortable.
Daughter’s Deli is a smaller menu, a cozier place, and nicer service all around in the central heart of WeHo.
Love Brent’s, but nothing on the menu is as iconic as the #19 at Langers. The latter is also in a more central location for any other touristy stuff you have planned.
That is something to take into consideration for sure. I am hungry for #19 now.
Not really. It’s in a shit area. But the food is undeniable.
Langer's has better sandwiches and Brent's has better plated food, so it depends on what you're looking to eat. Can't go wrong with either tbh.
They’re both really good.
Don’t make me pick but for out of towners I choose langers.
Langer's. Best pastrami in the world.
Where else have you had pastrami in the US?
Jakes in Milwaukee is definitely better than Langer's, Nathan's in Detroit or Zingermans, Katz in NYC.
I think Langer’s pastrami is superior to Katz’s. I’ve heard good things about Nathan’s in Detroit, but have not been there personally. So I have not had any pastrami better than Langer’s (which I believe is also used at Daughter’s Deli.)
But Langer’s location is a big turn-off.
Yeah. It's a bummer. I agree that Langer's is better than Canter's. I haven't been to any of the delis up in the SFV yet.
Johnnies Pastrami in Culver City is better than Langer's .
And Johnnie's in west Adams is better than culver's
i agree with everything here
Never knew they had two locations
langers.
Langer's pastrami sandwich is next level. That's the one deli offering you can get in LA that's better than anywhere else pretty much except maybe for NYC. Brent's might arguably be better all-around but they can't compete with having something over-the-top good as Langer's pastrami, except *maybe* their cabbage soup which personally I can't stand but everyone else seems to love it.
My Jewish friend from New York City, who is the daughter of a kosher butcher, we always go to Langer’s.
Langer’s #19
Langer’s pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are way better, but everything else is just ok.
Brent’s kosher deli staples are better, but I wouldn’t drive to Northridge just to go there.
Canter’s for the history and bakery case.
I would take them to Nate and Al’s. For pastrami, it’s Langer’s by a mile. But since they’re tourists and Langer’s, in kind of a shitty area, I would take them to Nate’s. Larry King and probably other celebrities have eaten there over the years.
I would say Greeblatt’s on Sunset, but they’ve been closed for maybe a year or more.
The more I think about it, I think you should just take them to Canter’s. They are not there for the food. They are there for the experience. You got the farmers market right down the road and of course all of the museums, including the new Academy museum.
Don’t know if they have kids, but there’s a bunch of cool little shops, including flight club, which has sneakers in the tens of thousands of dollars sometimes.
Roll N Rye. Someone bring it back, please.
I just (as in 30 minutes ago) returned from my first trip to Brent’s and had the #13. It’s been a long time since I’ve had Langers but Brent’s pastrami was fantastic.
BRENT'S. By a mile.
What is the best thing to order at Brent’s?
I'm an outlier, but I'm always going to order egg salad sandwich on rye or matzah ball soup with bagel chips. They are my go to. The tongue is good as well, if you're into that.
That all sounds great.
Friend, come on this side of the hill and we can go enjoy egg salad sandwiches at Apple Pan .
I used to work on Pico. How did I not know they had egg salad at Apple Pan?
Stuffed cabbage dish.
Directions to Langer’s.
Brent's has catered nearly every shiva I've ever attended.
Brent’s or Roll N Rye for me and my shivas. Roll N Rye was better but Brent’s is great for catering.
I go to Brents for the whitefish salad. Langer's for the #44
Brent’s. Love their 555.
How much do they like Pastrami?
They like pastrami but they’re from New Mexico.
Have a sentimental attachment to Brent's, but Langer's is better.
Brent's is best all around, their lox and baked goods are superior to Langer's by and large. Langer's is way better when it comes to soup, sandwiches, especially pastrami.
If time is an issue, Langer's will likely make the most sense.
Shermans in palm springs
Canters is a waste of gravity.
If they’re really after the best, Langer’s, and brave the neighborhood. If they’d accept very good and also historic in a less troubled neighborhood, Nate ‘n Al’s.
Langer all day. Everyday.
I got food poisoning from Brents years ago.
Edit. Why does everyone have some personal connection to this place? It sucked and made me sick.
What did you order?
No idea
Best pastrami (get the Reuben) is at Johnnies in west Adams. Not much of a vibe but best around
I’ve gotta check that out because I’ve never heard of it before.
Not at all true. Most Jewish owned delis do not keep kosher.
Where’d you get that? https://www.langersdeli.com/about-langers-delicatessen-restaurant/the-langers-story/
Oh wow didn’t know that. Cool fact!
That's cause it's not true. Most delis are not kosher, because most Jews do not keep kosher. And Langer was indeed Jewish.
Oh so he was Jewish? I always assumed he was and find it hard to believe he wasn’t. What is the above commenter getting at? Need more info here. Unless he considers non-orthodox Jews non-Jewish or something.
Yes. Every time the subject of delis comes up on here kosher and Jewish are conflated. It is not kosher to mix milk and meat, yet the Reuben is a signature deli item everywhere--as most delis are kosher style rather than kosher.
Jews faced a lot of discrimination bitd. They frequented Jewish owned businesses by necessity, because they weren't welcome non Jewish places, and Langers was one of those Jewish owned businesses.
Thanks for the clarification
Deli meat increases cancer risk; its not healthy. I try to live as healthy as possible; no drinking, no smoking, exercise (cardio and weights), a diet high in polyphenols, no soda, drink reverse osmosis water and try to limit refined carbs.
"For many people, processed meats are a staple in their diets. After all, processed meats don’t just include the occasional hot dog at a ball game; they also include the deli meat on your sandwich, the pepperoni on your pizza, the salami on your charcuterie board, and the bacon on your breakfast plate.
With processed meats being so common, is there reason to be concerned about their possible health effects, including their potential to increase your risk for cancer? The short answer is yes. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified processed meats as a Group 1 human carcinogen, which is any substance known to cause cancer. If a carcinogen is classified in Group 1, it means there is sufficient scientific evidence that it can cause cancer."
😂😂😂
I am voting Langers. By far.
