Amazing news from the Somali government: they no longer wish to renew the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, meaning no more of foreign peacekeeping troops in the country
Way I see it for the government of the FRS the issue isn't precisely whether UNSOM mandate is relevant or not. The issue is competition over funding and resources coming from the donor countries. If UNSOM's mandate is terminated, then the funds that were previously funding UNSOM's work, could be diverted/allocated to the Federal government of Somalia. Not taking sides here or arguing for a continued UN role, but this I think may be the most important motivation for the request.
You really and honestly think those funds will be diverted? 🤣🤣🤣
This is how it works - donor donates money on condition that services or activities are executed by company x. Company x or team x are actually owned or operated by allies of the donor. It's called keeping the money in the family.
The moment you kick out company x, the taps will run dry.
AMISOM is the important one, the main force will withdraw by December 2024 but a ‘Post AMISOM’ resolution is expected to be submitted soon. Likely will include foreign soldiers in a more advisory role than a field action role and things like military bases and outposts will be handed to the Somali army itself
Is the country capable of defending and supporting law and order?
