Has anyone backpacked in Africa before? Where would you start, and end your trip?
Cultural ExplorationCurrently on that trip. Started in South Africa… 6 countries later I’m in Kenya
how long have you been on that trip and what other 6 countries did you visit?
Currently in month 3 out of 6-9 months trip. Started in South Africa, then Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia, and now Kenya. Will eventually end up Ghana.
Niceee, is the trip expensive? Ballpark if you don’t mind. I’d love to do a similar trip
Ball park figure is difficult because I’ve rented my flat to cover my mortgage at home and that generates a little bit. I am also eating in savings. But generally I’m spending about £1000 to £1500 a month. Im also travelling with my boyfriend which helps share costs, especially accommodation.
please document this! you're able to document it for yourself and also earn money through ad revenue / or donations through patreon.
I’m not the most active with posting on social media, how would I even begin. Have no idea.
You always go with your own flow, but it'll come naturally to you eventually.
People I love watching at the moment are @ noflomo and @ explorob on IG.
They're doing the same thing as you, just post whenever you can on your stories and then make reels/posts about each event or country.
Africa is massive... You pick a couple of countries and you do some of them.
I backpacked around south africa after the army for about 6 months.... I barely managed to go from my Base, (Durban) to home, (Cape town).... But that was fun.
As from where to start, I would say one of the extreme north/south/east/West countries.
The Cairo to Cape town route is very popular. Ethiopia might be a problem currently but it would be a shame to skip over it. Enjoy!!
Sudan is also under a civil war and it is probably not safe for you to go through that route
I backpacked almost five years ago and started in Morocco.
As someone from Eritrea, it was an amazing opportunity to slowly see other parts of Africa. I highly recommend it. Hoping to return to the motherlands for more rounds!
For real! Especially countries in West Africa. Understandably, they’re not only relatively parallel on the map but culturally different too but it was super interesting seeing that difference between eri and say, gambia, in person.
Which countries did you get to experience? That's so cool. Also from Eritrea and only interested in traveling in Africa/South America after have lived and traveled around western europe my entire life
I had an overland trip planned with my friend who suddenly changed her mind so I joined a tour with a company called African Trails from London to Nairobi.
I found another friend on that trip so when it ended we explored Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe together.
We spent about a year on the continent.
I flew back to London from Harare and he continued on to South Africa.
On our next trip we went to Egypt on our way to Australia.
I encourage everyone with an interest in any African country to enjoy grass-roots slow travel if they can.
I backpacked in Ethiopia and it‘s been beautiful!
When did you do that and have you any pictures posted anywhere? That's cool!
It‘s been a while. I think it was in 2018 or 2019. If you send me a dm a could show you some pictures. I‘ve been there with both of my best friends. The people were very friendly and we felt pretty safe for most of the trip. Just Addis Abeba was a lot. Someone stole my phone but I was lucky to get it back and people tried to overcharge us by an unreasonable amount even for tourist prices. All the other cities and towns were great and pretty calm. The bus services were actually pretty great too.
It's my dream, but so far I've only been to Eritrea.
Would love to discover Tanzania/Uganda/Rwanda, especially the Rwenzori mountains. A stroll around Ethiopia would be stunning too.
You don’t really backpack in Africa, you travel old school.
What is "backpack" and what is "travel old school"? What are the differences between them?
Why not?
