theyre are profound and known for their durability. has anybody ever seen it past 400k?
what’s the highest mileage you’ve ever seen on a 4Runner?
🎙 DiscussionDamn.
Wow. That’s insane.
Not mine, but here is a 3rd gen with almost 650k miles on it. https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=AMG_0&vin=JT3HN86R7X0242338&source=BUP
I've read about a couple being over 700k or more, but can't find any hard proof.
holy schnikes!
Nice, still getting all the love!!
Jeep has left the chat
Come on I saw one get up to 10,000mi once.
Being towed behind an RV doesn't count.
Seriously, why is it always a jeep being pulled behind an RV?
Because RV stands for Recovery Vehicle.
Because they come from the factory with tow mode, insert joke here, but they are one of the easier vehicles to setup for flat towing with tow mode and the simplicity of tow kit installs
One of my Facebook friends posted a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 120,000 miles for sale for $35k. I almost spit out my drink 🤣
Must have accidentally added an extra 0.
You would think! I just checked on it and he already has it down to $20k - just a couple weeks since posting it lol.
Or an extra 5
Cherokee XJ enters the chat
Those old bastards run forever, right?
Those old Jeep Cherokees with the 4.0 inline 6 would run shitty for longer than most cars would run, period. It's basically the cockroach of engines: you just can't kill a Cherokee 4.0.
The engine doesn't break down, the car just rusts away from the engine.
It has 6 cylinders to keep you going in case you lose a few.
For real. I picked up an XJ and it was impressive how it just ran despite being really neglected. Like no tips on the spark plugs, sludgy oil, rusty muddy coolant, etc.
Only thing that's stopped it was rodents chewing through the wiring harness but that was an easy enough fix.
There's only going to be two SUVs around during a possible apocalypse: A smooth running 4Runner with 300k miles, and a shitty running Jeep Cherokee 4.0L that also has 300k miles.
I'd still trust the AMC 4.0 with shitty end of the world fuel and no replacement parts over the Toyota. Feel free to downvote me but any modern motor would be sputtering and misfiring.
It's a running joke that you use old AMC I6 motors to use up whatever old oil, gas, and coolant you have laying around. The AW4 transmission and NP231 transfer case also dgaf what fluids you run in them.
Sold my last one with just over 300k on it and never had any mechanical issues. Few leaks that needed fresh gaskets but nothing that couldn’t be done in the driveway with a socket set from Lowe’s lol
I owned two XJ cherokees and one is still on the road and has over 240k on it.
240k is pretty common for XJ’s these days. I wheel one of my three XJ’s pretty hard and most of the guys I wheel with have XJs or ZJs with over 300k miles.
That's the XJ counterpart to the 650,000 mile 4Runner...
That XJ Cherokee runs like dog shit but dang it, it still runs!
4Runner, like a Jeep but…
I saw a 3rd gen listed with like 645k miles on it. Still looked great but I didn't wanna get myself into that.
That thing has circumnavigated the globe 25 times at the equator
holy schnikes!
What were they asking? $15k?
Idk mines at 310 gonna do a belt and keep going
Someone posted a 4th gen with 500k on here not too long ago
V8 or V6?
I’m gonna say the 4.7. My dad’s sequoia is at 423k
That was my assumption, but as a V6 owner w 240k one can dream
Why wouldn't the v6 be as reliable?
I work at a dealer. The top score at our place is over 800k and counting. He bought it here and services it here weekly. It’s a 2006.
What does he do to it weekly? Lol
Oil changes :)
He changes his oil weekly?
Must drive for work. A lot
Bro must tow machine guns to work on weekly basis lol
That’s 854 miles per week assuming equal distribution. Weekly might be an over estimate. Monthly makes some sort of sense
That is 850 a week is not that much. I average around 1000 a week. I get an oil change every 5 weeks. I am a feild service engineer... this kind of milage is normal for people that are in feild service. I have 140,000 on my 2021 Nightshade .
I got 480,000 on my 2011 Toyota Avalon and 2001 490,000 on my lexus 300es.
But my all-time record was my 1980 Mercedes 300D. i got it with 250,000 and put another 500,000 on it (2 transmission, rebuild fuel pump, and rebuild the top end of the inline 5 cylinder diesal engine. In the end, the rust got it.
does he travel to other countries with it?? 😝
The top of Minnesota to the gulf of Texas. Every week.
Service Advisor for Toyota Dealership
2nd Gen 247K
3rd Gen 288K
4th Gen 422K (V8)
5th Gen (362K)
If you own a 4Runner, you still see it yourself, maybe even at 800k
When I was shopping for one a few years ago I remember seeing a white 5th gen with 5xx,xxx on it
My 3rd gen odometer stopped working at 280k back in 08. it’s been a daily driver up to a year ago, including driving it out of state on a weekly basis for work. for over 2 years I’d put over 1000 miles on it a week, so who knows.
It's always the odometer! Let us know your secrets 4runner!
3rd gen runners and I believe potentially second as well? Have a problem of a solder joint that fails and just needs to be resoldered.
I fixed it then 2 weeks later was doing gears, and never replaced the abs tone rings in the rear end, and lost my Speedo/odometer again lol. for whatever reason it worked out I went 4 years of vehicles with no Speedo, so I was used to it and didn’t care that much. Just know the rpm’s in 4th for 55 and 70 and it’s easy to eyeball 25-40 mph.
My friend had a 2nd gen with about 460k or so.
He bought it with 375k for $1000.
It was neglected when he bought it and continued to be sevetely neglected by him. At about 450k it literally started falling apart. Like the fan pulley literally fell off one day. He jury rigged that and like 6 months later the rear end grenaded. It was still running and he had the driveshaft disconnected so you could put it in 4hi and it drove as a front wheel drive 4runner.
Now its rotting in his yard, hes a pretty severe alcoholic and has dreams of restoring it. Its truly ready for the scrapyard.
Mine is at 321k and purrs like a kitten. I think the only things that kill a 4runner are rust, and Age+Neglect.
What an amazing story lol
1 billion miles
I believe you.
Elon borrowed it and took it to space
Saw 680k online
I put a clutch in a friends second gen that had 565,000 miles on it.
I had a guy at the dealership service department tell me there’s a third gen in town with over 500k miles. Original owner, I believe.
499,999.
Source: literally the next post on my reddit timeline. 3rd gen 4runner
Thats in KMs which is 310k miles.
I have 430k on my 2001 taco
I have a buddy with a 97 that has 719k on it. Original transmission and engine.
Wow!
I’ll see if he can snap a pic of the odometer
I have an old high school friend who bought a used 2nd gen 4Runner that had 165k miles on it.
He then kept it for the next decade and put on 200k more miles onto it. Other than oil changes, a brake system flush, and a new alternator, he never had an issue with it.
That could be me. Bought a 3rd gen at 159k that is at 290k now. Replaced radiator and O2 sensor. Other than that just brakes and fluids.
315k on mine, 08 4th gen V6
A 4th gen for sale near me had around 450k.
On a 4Runner, probably around 500,000 Km, it was a 4th Gen.
The highest mileage I’ve seen is from my uncle’s ‘96 Hilux, the odometer has been stuck at 999,999 Km for the last 8 years.
In person.. 224k miles. It has more but that's where it was when someone stole it this week.
Oof this hurt me through the screen. Sorry there
Guy at work has a 3rd Gen with 550+. He bought it at 60k. Pretty wild. Confirmed it’s the original transmission too.
My friend had one his parents bought him when he graduated college. Brand new 98. It’s still on the road. 420k. He bought a 2016 new. He loves them.
My ‘99 is at 399.6, and expecting to join the 400 club in June on a NY-NC roadtrip. 👋☺️
There was one for sale near me a couple years ago with 560k, 4th gen v6. I actually almost bought it. It was dirt cheap and fairly clean plus the mileage didn’t scare me too much, it didn’t get a half a million miles by accident
4th gen V8 will always win this contest
Yep. I’m at 320 and not even competitive in this post. I do make the oil change guys do a double take when I read off the odometer though, which is always fun.
Although my 3rd gen was at like 340 and still up for long road trips until it was totaled by a deer.
About 670k with factory supercharger on it, I have images of it in our shop.
I wonder how long mine will last. 325k. 2000 SR5 MT.
I’ve put a LOT of money and work into it over the past four or five years. Compared to the $6k I paid for it like 15 years ago, anyway.
I’m about to redo more of the maintenance parts and especially focusing on replacing all coolant hoses. I’ve already done the entire suspension and steering. Brakes several times. Transmission once. All sorts of other things like clutch hydraulics, brake boosters, lock actuators, etc…
I mean, at some point I have a new 4Runner again, right?
Saw one on Kijiji laat year with 800K kms. It had 14 timing belt stickers in the listing pictures
My 5th gen is at 260k these comments give me hope she may have another 200k in her 😂🙏🏼
I used to work at a dealer and a lady had 305k on at 2011 or 2012. I was a little dirty but overall in fantastic shape
Have seen several in my local group in the low 300,000. Mine has 254,500
almost to 350 on my 05
I've personally owned a 3rd gen that was just over 350k when I got rid of it, a 4th gen at 275k, and my 2nd gen currently has 287k
Mine, which has 420k.
Not to bring hate but there’s a old man that drove his g wagon all over the world. Total my about 500k miles.
Looking at a 98 with 250,000, no rust and trying to figure out if it’s worth the high mileage fixes. Anyone who’s had a third gen, what fixes come up after 250,000 miles? Any modifications or preventative things I should plan to do?
My 2004 4th gen had 350k then sold it for a 5th.
512k on a 3rd gen when I was working at Toyota
i have a ‘97 with 345k on it……kicker is i think i might have damaged a head gasket. is it worth replacing ?
Saw an add for an older 4Runner (90s) with 1.3 million. The description clarified and said “yes, you read that right 1.3 million kms, on original drive train”.
450K on a 3rdGen 1998 SR5, all stock and original engine, regular maintenance and same great mechanic for 15yrs. I was the only owner, and turned her in for a 5thGen just last year.
I have a 2015 and it has 263,000 I hope I can get that many more
My 3rd gen is currently at like 310k and my 5th gen is at like 135k
reading these comments toyota is truly remarkable engineering. which engines should i do more research on to appreciate its durability?
My 3rd Gen V6 has 260K mi and aside from a new alternator, wheels, brakes, and oil changes. Nothing has gone wrong. Bought it from the first owner at 150K.
Currently have a 3rd gen with 372k, but I’ve seen multiple over 400k
I have a 2000 SR5 with 335k
My 1998 Tacoma has 307k.
I haven't personally seen one close to 400k. Hell, mine is barely at 234k. Maybe in another 30 years I'll be at or past 400k.
I’m close to 400 on my 3rd gen and it runs great
Met a guy while hunting who had 550,000 kms so whatever that is in miles. He had to rebuild the motor in for the rear window with some non plastic pieces, that was his biggest complaint with the truck
I seen an ‘02 with 449K
I know it’s not the question being asked but, I have seen a 06 Tundra with over 900,000 and a 1980 something Landcruiser with like 1.1 million miles.
When I installed car audio in high school, I saw 2 in the 750 range, and 3 in the 500. All of them 1st gen Tacoma’s, but that’s the same drive train and chassis. One of the 750 guys said it just needed struts and timing belts regularly. Everything else original. That’s when I decided to sell my Jeep, realized 4runners are cheaper and basically the same thing as a Tacoma, and 10 years later on I’m 4 4runner number 4
Had a 97 that got to 368k when I sold it. I know the guy that bought it took it well over 400k.
I had 380,000 on mine and wanted to keep it forever to see how many more I could get but got a job with quite a commute and decided it was time to upgrade.
353K on a '93
If you ask my mother, my 4th gen with 130k is extremely high mileage and I’m an idiot for buying it! 😂
My '01 is at 251k. Won't be the highest total here, but it is serving me well!
My 5th gen has 230k and I hope I can take it to 1 million lol
My neighbor has 2nd gen with 450 that he dailies.
My old 3rd Gen finally died at around 510k miles. I was told I was an idiot when I bought it with 460k miles
for $1800. It was a great vehicle that helped get through a rough financial patch. Only thing I did to it was new control arm bushings and a new starter.
Personally? My 2010 at 312,000kms. My moms old ‘98 didn’t even break 300,000 before rust killed it.
I sold at 02 with 430k miles on it and it drove better than a lot of 200k mile and under examples that I’ve driven or owned
Personally, I've seen 478k. It was on my old 87, which I sold at 368k but I ran into the guy about 10 years later at a grocery store and he showed me the mileage. Said he was still on the original engine and transmission.
